During four days in September 2024, the flexible filtering environmental barge FEB-I was tested in Sundby Harbor in Copenhagen together with a MiniMax oil skimmer and a Spate PD 75 pump from DESMI.
The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the ability of FEB-I to operate with a commonly used oil skimmer, which is used by emergency services in several countries of the world. The trial was also to test the endurance of the diesel-powered pump, as well as the long-term effect of the pump on FEB-I due to its weight and vibrations from the diesel engine.
Both the MiniMax and the Spate PD 75 pump ran continuously for 6, 8 and 6 hours, respectively, without any problems, and without any negative impact on FEB-I.
The testing of FEB-I also gave rise to an unplanned demonstration of FEB-I's "onsite filtration capacity":
During one of the days of the test it rained heavily, whereby a small remnant of old diesel oil from a disused tank facility was washed out of the quay and ran into the harbor basin. Here, the FEB-I with the MiniMax skimmer could easily collect the oil from the surface of the water and filter the oil from the water in the FEB-I, and direct the cleaned water back into the harbor. This would not have been possible with a conventional skimmer only.
